  • Coastal Engineering Short Course and Seminar – Stellenbosch 27 February – 2 March 2012. The Short Course component (Monday-Wednesday) provides a structured set of lectures for introducing the field while also elaborating on latest developments and techniques.The Seminar component (Thursday-Friday) provides case studies and seminar presentations from coastal consultants and specialists.   • YSSP, the Young Scientists Summer Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis near Vienna, Austria, offers advanced graduate students from around the world the opportunity to spend a summer working with distinguished scientists on projects related to their own doctoral research in the natural and social sciences.   • Urban Forestry & Greening towards Sustainable Municipalities short course, Rhodes University. Taking place between 26 and 30 March 2012.The primary purpose of this short course is to develop human capacity and understanding in South Africa and neighbouring countries regarding the value and role of urban forestry, along with some practical planning and monitoring skills around urban forestry projects.   • SABIF Species Distribution Modelling Workshop: 23 – 27 January 2012. SABIF is hosting a hands-on Species Distribution Modelling Workshop. The course will be conducted by Dr Vernon Visser from the Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology at Stellenbosch University. The venue will be the University of Western Cape, Cape Town. For logistical reasons workshop numbers are limited. Participants should have background/experience in both biology/biodiversity, and the use of GIS tools. This workshop is targeted at scientists, conservation planners and academics. Application deadline is 9 December 2011. Further information available here.
  • Annual Darwin Scholarship Programme: Monitoring and Communicating Biodiversity. 21 – 31 August 2012 at Preston Montford Field Centre, Shrewsbury & Juniper Hall Field Centre, Dorking, near London. This is a short scholarship programme led by the Field Studies Council (FSC) in the UK. The scholarship programme is aimed at Young Scientists from around the world, probably working for a non-governmental organisation, government department or in a Biology or Ecology faculty at University. You should be under the age of 35 and studying at graduate or post graduate level or be a young lecturer or work for an environmental organisation. The Scholarship will focus on three areas: skills of observation and identification, skills of recording biodiversity and skills of communicating biodiversity to different target groups. The full cost of the 10 day scholarship programme is 1,450 GBP per person. This covers the costs of all accommodation, teaching, and local travel in the UK. It does not cover the cost of getting to and from Preston Montford Field Centre in Shrewsbury. To help meet the cost of the scholarship the FSC is also providing a limited number of bursaries for 650 GBP. Application deadline: 6 January 2012.   • The Applied Centre for Climate and Earth System Science (ACCESS) will be hosting a workshop on the 5th – 15th December 2011 through the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The workshop will focus on the evolution of Planet Earth’s glorious diversity of flora and fauna and the conditions required to maintain these favourable environments. Funding is available to cover the travel and accommodation costs of all successful applicants. Application closing date: 17th October 2011. Click here for more details.

  • NFEPA training workshops: mid November until 25th of November in Cape Town and Pretoria . The workshop is aimed at government authorities and environmental consultants involved with, or contributing to, any planning or decision-making process that should take freshwater ecosystems into account. The workshop will cover the use of NFEPA in terms of the main implementation mechanisms - such as the water resource classification system, bioregional planning, and regularoty mechanisms such as EIAs and water licensing. We also aim to address key issues and questions regarding the use of NFEPA in practice. If you have therefore used NFEPA or have specific questions that you want to have addressed during these sessions, please email these questions to either Jeanne Nel (Jnel@csir.co.za) or Liesl Hill (Lhill@csir.co.za) before 17 October.Workshop attendance is free of charge. Travel and accommodation arrangements and costs are however not included and is at the cost of each participant.
